How Naming Experts Create Company Name Ideas?

We have been providing company name suggestions for years. From working with global giants like Panasonic to crafting identities for a luxury car brand, a high-end salon, an ethnic clothing brand, real estate ventures, luxury villas, consulting firms, legal services, art businesses, computers, and even pharmaceutical brands, we’ve seen it all. In this guide, we will share the methods and case studies of real clients to help you understand how you can create a company name by yourself.

Whichever industry you are from, these tips will help you. We cannot promise it will be easy, but we can promise that if you stick with the process, you will get the result you’re looking for. Remember, a company name is something you only get to do once. You can change your logo or your website in the future, but changing your company name involves significant cost and a loss of brand value. Even for us, the process is intense; we have to constantly push our thinking to come up with unique ideas. We’ve tried many methods, and the following techniques are the only ones that have consistently worked.

Who This Guide Is For?

This guide is for people who are stuck and don’t know how to begin the journey of creating a company name. It’s for startups at an initial stage, as well as small business owners, who don’t want to invest in hiring an agency but are willing to go through the process themselves. This is for people who have at least 1 to 2 weeks to dedicate to this. That’s right—1 to 2 weeks. We told you it wouldn’t be easy, but if you stick with this, you will get the end result.

Who This Guide Is Not For?

This guide is not for people who need a brand name in a day or within just 2-3 days. Trust us, even with all the money and resources in the world, creating an exceptional brand name in that short a time is impossible. This process is not for people who don't have time to spare. You will be sitting down every single day for a couple of hours and going through a quite intense process. If you don't have at least two hours every day, this is not for you.

We know this is an unusual blog. Most articles focus on making things sound easy and fast. That is the very reason you are reading this—because those things do not work. We are after real results, and we will be as brutally honest as possible.

Why a Strong Company Name Matters?

In business, naming your company is one of the few things you only get to do once, and it has an impact on your business for decades to come. Getting the name right on the first go is one of the most important things you can do for your business.

A strong company name should reflect your core business idea and not box you in, allowing for future growth and flexibility. It should capture your vision and speak to the right type of customer. In company name creation, only two things truly matter: pronunciation and meaning. The meaning needs to convey the vision of the brand, while the pronunciation should attract the right customers and position you as an expert in your industry. A strong company name stands out from competitors rather than trying to fit in.

Here are the main characteristics of a strong company name:

  • It’s Memorable: Here’s a test. Say your potential name over a phone call to a friend and ask them to write it down. If they don’t make any spelling mistakes and can recall it the next day, you have a memorable company name.
  • : It’s Intriguing A catchy business name should generate curiosity. People should wonder about the story behind the name. Creativity and fun can help make a name stand out and be more engaging.
  • It’s Pronounceable (for your audience): A company name should be easy for your target audience to pronounce. This doesn’t mean it has to be simple. Some luxury brands intentionally use names that are difficult to pronounce because people take pride in knowing how to say them correctly.
  • It’s Available: A strong brand name should be easy to acquire for trademark and for company registration. What’s the point of creating a name that isn’t available?
  • It’s Unique Online: The name should be distinct enough to create a unique identity on the internet, so nobody gets confused.
  • It Makes You Proud: A strong brand name is one that you feel proud of saying every single day.

Understanding Business Name Requirements

Before you dive into brainstorming, it’s essential to understand what makes a business name truly effective. A catchy business name does more than just sound good, it becomes the foundation of your brand identity and helps your company stand out in a crowded market. The perfect name should be memorable, easy to spell, and simple to pronounce, ensuring that your target audience can recall and share it effortlessly. It should also reflect your company’s values, services, or specific product, and resonate with potential customers.

When considering business name ideas, think about how the name will look on your website, logo, and social media handles. A confusing or hard-to-remember name can make it difficult for customers to find you online, which can hinder your business’s success. You can use business name generator initially to generate some creative options and inspiration, helping to spark ideas and then using that as a staring point to create more names that match your brand’s personality.

Don’t forget to verify domain availability early in the process. Securing a matching domain ensures your business has a consistent online presence, which is crucial for building trust and recognition. Ultimately, a good business name should inspire confidence, reflect your brand, and make your company easy to find and remember—setting the stage for long-term success.

Our Company Naming Process

We’ll guide you through how we create names for our clients, and then you can use these same methods for your own business. The entire process starts with understanding the core of the business. When beginning the naming process, it's important to consider multiple naming options and to research other brands in your industry. This helps ensure your business name is unique, memorable, and stands out in the market.

Step 1: Define Your Brand Foundation

Before you can find the perfect name, you need to know who you are.

  • What is the company's voice and tone? Think of this as the way you communicate. If you had to describe how you talk to your customers, which words would you use? Friendly, professional, witty, authoritative, technical? The more specific, the better.
  • What is the company's look and feel? This includes everything from the logo and website to the office interior. How would you describe it in words? Sophisticated, welcoming, minimalist, bold, intimidating?
  • What does this company stand for (its WHY)? Your "why" is your belief system. We often ask clients to complete this sentence: "We believe in..." It could be, "We believe in creating products that help customers become more creative," or "We believe in creating homes that people feel excited to wake up in." These statements embody your vision and attract the right customers and employees. This idea comes from Simon Sinek's book "Start with Why."
  • Who is the company talking to (its target audience)? Use a combination of words to describe a segment. For a streetwear brand, the target audience could be "troublemakers, rule-breakers, the mischiefs." This focuses on their psychographics (how they think) rather than just their demographics. For a real estate company targeting high-end investors, the audience might be "legacy builders" or "visionary investors."

Step 2: Strategic Keyword Research

Once you have a clear understanding of your brand, it's time to gather keywords. Open up a Google Sheet or Excel file to keep everything organized. At this stage, you can use AI tools like ChatGPT to generate relevant keywords.

Here’s how you can prompt ChatGPT for the best results. First, write down 10 keywords that describe your brand's characteristics (e.g., Sophisticated, Exclusive, Bold, Natural, etc.). Then use a prompt like this:

“You are an expert in language and researching keywords for brand names. I want you to generate 50 keywords for my luxury brand that has the following characteristics: <YourKeywords1, YourKeywords2, ... >”

You can also ask it to generate keywords in other languages, like French or Italian, for a touch of sophistication. You can also use online tools like Power Thesaurus to find variations of your words.

Step 3: Generating Creative Business Name Ideas

With a rich list of keywords, it’s time to create. Generating a variety of business names is crucial to finding the best fit for your brand identity and ensuring your name stands out. Aim for at least five potential names each day, and don’t rush the process. Review them the next day to see which ones still resonate.

Here are some techniques to generate a good business name:

  1. Combining Words: Take two relevant words and merge them. For example, the ethnic fashion brand we named, Jivnic, comes from “Jivan” (life) and “Iconic.”
  2. Using Foreign Words: Incorporate words from other languages that evoke the right feeling. For the luxury car brand Meccardi, we combined “Me” with the Italian surname “Accardi” (meaning brave).
  3. Creating Made-Up Words: Invent a new word that sounds attractive. Evanico, a cosmetic brand, was created from “Eva” (life) and “Nico” (prosperity/victory).
  4. Using Personal Names: This classic approach, like Ralph Lauren or Giorgio Armani, can create a sense of heritage.

Step 4: The Crucial Availability Check

This is the most critical and often frustrating part of the process. You can't get attached to a name until you know it's available.

  • Trademark Search: Conduct a thorough trademark search on your country's official registry (for India, it's the IP India portal; for the US, it's the USPTO, or for worldwide WIPO). Search for the exact name and similar-sounding names.
  • Business Registration Check: Search your country's business registration database (like the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in India) to see if any other businesses are using the name.
  • Domain Availability: Check for the availability of the domain name. If the .com is taken, consider other extensions or adding a word like "shop" or "global."
  • Social Media Handles: Check for availability on all relevant social media platforms to ensure consistent branding.

Step 5: Finalize Your Company Name with Feedback

After your availability check, you should have a shortlist of 3-5 names. Now it’s time for feedback.

  1. Prepare Names & Participants: Select your top three options. Identify a diverse group for feedback, including potential customers, industry experts, and friends.
  2. Collect Feedback: Present the names and ask which sounds the most memorable, catchy, and appropriate for your brand.
  3. Analyze and Finalize: Weigh the feedback against your brand strategy. Before making your final decision, take a rest or step back to reflect on the options. This pause can help ensure clarity and confidence in your choice. The name that best aligns with your goals and resonates with your target audience is your winner.

Registering a Business Name

Once you’ve landed on a great business name, the next step is to make it official. Registering your business name is essential for establishing your company’s legal identity and protecting your brand from being used by other businesses. Start by using a company name availability checker to verify that your chosen name isn’t already in use by other businesses in your region. A quick search on relevant government or business registration websites can save you time and trouble down the road.

After confirming availability, you can proceed with the registration process, which typically involves submitting the required paperwork and paying any applicable fees. It’s also wise to check the availability of your business name as a domain and across social media handles to ensure a unified brand presence online. This step helps your company stand out and makes it easier for customers to find and connect with your brand.

Keep in mind that registering your business name doesn’t automatically grant you exclusive rights to it. For full protection, consider trademarking your name. By taking these steps, you’ll ensure your business is set up for success and ready to make a strong impression in your industry.
